Most everyone knows the occasional feeling of discontentment when you look in the mirror. “This is as good as it’s gonna get!” is a phrase I’ve heard myself say in response to what I see in my reflection. But a little while ago, instead of that phrase, these words popped into my head after checking myself out:
“I’m not stunning…and that’s okay”
It’s a simple thought. I may not be an A+, drop-dead gorgeous beauty queen-and that is okay. I don’t need to be. I am as beautiful as God has made me to be, and I can be joyful and content in what he has given me. I need to take care of my body, so I can healthily serve God as long as possible, but being stunning-I don’t need.
So these lyrics didn’t come out of a season of self-loathing, and they don’t spur on a season of self-neglect. For me, they simply encourage me to delight in who God has made me to be. They remind me that when I want to see something stunning, instead of trying to make myself the object of that affection, or instead of searching for it online-I look to him. I want to be most concerned with how He looks when I go out in public-not me. I want His beauty to mesmerize me.
I’m Not Stunning
I’m not stunning
And that’s okay.
I’m kind of average
Won’t take your breath away
If I walk down the street,
No heads would turn today
I’m not stunning
But that’s okay.
——————-
I don’t have to be the Belle of the ball
I don’t have to be the fairest of them all
When I look in the mirror,
I know what I see,
Though I’m not stunning, I’m not stunning
I’m wonderfully me
Strong, beautiful, and free
No mistake or tragedy.
I’m wonderfully me.
——————-
I’m not perfect
And that’s just fine
I drop the ball and
Don’t color in the lines.
Just list some flaws
I guarantee they’re mine
I’m not perfect,
And that’s just fine.
——————-
I don’t have to be the Belle of the ball
I don’t have to be the fairest of them all
When I look in the mirror,
I know what I see,
Though I’m not perfect, no I’m not perfect
I’m wonderfully me
Strong, beautiful, and free
No mistake or tragedy.
I’m wonderfully me.
——————-
I’m not brilliant, I not perfect, and I’m not stunning,
Still I’m wonderfully, remarkably made.
Though I fall, slip, trip, awkwardly skip, to the finish line-I’ll keep running.
To see my perfect, stunning Maker face to face.
——————-
Now, I don’t have to be the Belle of the ball,
I don’t have to be the fairest of them all
When I look in the mirror,
I know who made me,
Though I’m not stunning, and I’m not perfect
I’m righteous and redeemed,
Strong, beautiful, and free
No mistake or tragedy.
All because of Him,
I’m wonderfully me.
