As a child, when my mother could sense I was tempted to start telling a lie, she would always sternly remind me that she wants to be able to trust me. “Lying will break that trust.” I can still hear her say it, “Trust takes years to build up and only seconds to destroy.” I think of that statement often…years to build and seconds to destroy. Why? Why is it that naturally we are distrusting? That we assume we CANNOT trust people until they have proven themselves trustworthy, and then if they fail us, they must prove themselves all over again? The answer has many facets, including but not limited to: sin nature, insecurities, past pains, and pride. It seems to be a lot of hard work to overcome all of that to get someone to follow you; it is really so important that you trust me and I trust you? I can unequivocally say, absolutely.
And ultimately, it is important that we are people who trust because we serve a High King who is the most trustworthy being in the universe and we want to emulate Him. And we trust others knowing they too are made in the image and likeness of God and love is always hopeful (1 Cor. 13:7) and thinks the best of those we have the privilege of living life with.
